Product Description
Focusing on personal growth and empowerment, this engaging study helps readers develop the ability to understand, respect, and value diversity, and demonstrates how opening one's mind to the views of other peoples and cultures is central to a satisfying and successful life—both personally and professionally. Offers current, thorough, and deeply insightful discussions on diversity and workplace issues—what they are, their significance, and their relevance to the reader; discusses concepts such as teamwork, conflict management, racism, prejudice, and communication in a clear and concise fashion; and zeroes in on the relationship between an employee's success in the workplace and his/her ability to develop flexibility in their thinking so that they can positively and effectively deal with a variety of diversity issues. Integrates many real-life experiences and perspectives throughout, encourages journal-writing, and promotes understanding with many interactive exercises, including those developed for Internet use. For teacher training education courses, staff/professional development workshops, professionals in business management and human relations, or for anyone who wants a self-reflective and proactive guide to understanding today's issues of diversity.

5 out of 5 stars New edition - Great book!   April 9, 2009

Our new edition includes a full chapter on diversity-conscious leadership and as well fully updated statistics and research. Each chapter has new, engaging, interactive Internet exercises as well as in-class or independent activities. I use it in a graduate-level class for educators and find it often results in a new commitment to valuing diversity.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to Read and Relatively Inexpensive   September 16, 2008
J. Herndon
The book is very easy to read. It is short and to the point. It was also cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Provides opportunities for introspection   January 5, 2008

This book was mandatory reading for a diversity class that I just finished and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! Especially helpful were the opportunities to personally reflect on the sidebar questions, which the reader can use to journal and explore their journey as they become more aware and accepting of diversity. Dr. Bucher (and his wife Pat) have written an thoughful book that provides readers with the tools they need to become more open-minded of differences, whether it be race, gender, religion, sexuality--the book touches a variety of aspects. I would recomment this book to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars Making a Difference   December 31, 2007
Arvilla Lawrence (Glens Falls, NY)
I've been using this text for three years now for a graduate-level course for teachers. Every year my teachers let me know how much they enjoy the book and what a difference the course has made in their ability to relate to diverse populations. Thanks, Dr. Bucher for a great book.
