Racist/biased August 30, 2010 Kelly Navan (HARKER HEIGHTS, TX, US) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This textbook is the only textbook I have ever read that made me want to run over it with my car. It was not filled with facts, but instead biased racial slander towards many races, but most the majority race in the United States. Most of my classmates regardless of their ethinic orgin felt it was also over the top with condesending tones against whiteness. Cultural diversity should be about being proud of who you are regardless of your roots and respecting others through nonjudgmental eyes with an understanding of various cultural and ethnic differences; not try and make the situations of the world today worst through propaganda such as this. Plus, this textbook never discusses "whites" except when discussing how whites oppress other races/ethnic groups and couples all whites from the same orgin, with the same background and assumes Latinos are Mexican, instead of really understanding the differences within all Latino families in a much broader tone. I absolutly do not recommend this textbook for any reason.
Not a big fan of the book August 1, 2010 Jaclyn M. Buelow 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm not a big fan of the book. It seems very repetitive with the main ideas that can be gotten out of the first couple of chapters. Reviews implications for some of the major cultural groups, but this can be done just by doing your own research. The book was mandatory for my class. Otherwise, I would not recommend buying it. Amazon was great though with speed of delivery and condition of product.

Awareness of your own biases June 20, 2010 Ebony A. Rao (New York, New York) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I believe this book frankly addresses the issues of racial and cultural biases that can play out in a counseling relationship. Sue & Sue work to aid the reader in exploring our county's history of oppression, overt and covert forms of racism, and how microaggressions can negatively impact a therapeutic relationship between counselor and client. A major purpose of the book is to help counselors of all racial and cultural backgrounds to recognize that when approaching clients with a White, Male, Eurocentric point of view, the counselor will more than likely bring their own biases to the counseling relationship. Because of that, many people may take offense to being told they hold biases, no one likes to be reminded of personal inadequacies. However, Sue & Sue provide examples from current events to prove how our own biases shape our view of one another. They also provide information to aid counselors in moving beyond biases to become more culturally aware. This book takes the student through a journey of self-exploration into their own personal biases and fears allowing them to come out on the other end with improved cultural awareness.
Excellent service and product June 16, 2010 Cynthia Jessup Excellent service! The book is amazing and explores culturally competent counselors. I learned a great deal about myself, thank you!
